Dr Yakubu Salifu
LecturerResearch Overview
My research interest falls under three broad areas;
- Palliative care/managing care at the end of life so that patients and their families will feel supported and live a more dignified life.
- The other areas of interest are providing care in a resource-poor context. This includes the provision of home-based palliative care and how services are delivered to meet the needs and aspirations of patients and their caregivers, particularly access to care (financial, resources, practical, and technical support).
- Lastly, palliative care around health and social policy to include vulnerable people who have challenges in accessing care. This involves how policy and professional interventions address the challenges of patients and families in dealing with long term chronic conditions.
Profile
I am a Co-Director of the LU Africa Research Hub and Senior Fellow HEA. My research is primarily influenced by my professional background as a nurse and an educationist, focusing on adult health, palliative care, family caregiving, and health policy. I have been involved in a large EU-funded consortium project called MyPal and serve as the CEO of COMPASS Ghana, a charitable organisation registered in both the UK and Ghana, aiming to improve access to palliative care in resource-poor communities. My recent research has centred on older adult care, family caregiving, home care, palliative and end-of-life care, and masculinity and stigma.
My PhD explored the experiences of men living with advanced prostate cancer and their caregivers, particularly in navigating home-based care within resource-poor contexts, addressing family caregiving dynamics, and cultural responses to illnesses such as stigma and masculinity. I supervise PhD students across the Division of Health Research, particularly in palliative care. I am keen to supervise PhD students focusing on palliative care topics, including addressing inequalities, understanding family caregiving dynamics, exploring cultural responses to chronic diseases, addressing poverty and financial insecurity, fostering compassionate communities, and integrating research seamlessly into care provision.
